Homes for people, not profit: Banning AirBNBs in the City of Sydney

Right now, there are thousands of homes in the City of Sydney that have been ripped away and turned into mini-hotels in a housing crisis.

Why? Property investors are buying houses and renting them out short-term for huge profits – even when it's never been harder to find a place to live.

In suburbs like Darlinghurst, Potts Point, Paddington and Millers Point there are streets where most of the houses are AirBNBs, chained with lockboxes out front.

New reports show there are more than 170,000 short-term rental properties, like AirBNBs, across Australia. Many of these reside in the City of Sydney, taking up thousands of dwellings that should be homes for people who live, work and want to build a life in our community.

We have a plan to fix that.

Other global cities across the world have already dealt with this problem. From New York to Amsterdam, Barcelona to Santa Monica, countless cities have moved to ban AirBNBs. These changes are transforming neighborhoods, returning tens of thousands of homes as secure long-term rentals.

We can do that here but we need your help.

While we have secured support from Council to investigate a ban on AirBNBs in non-primary residences, there is still a long way to go. Sign our petition to show your support to make over 5000 homes in the City of Sydney available again as secure, long-term rentals.

Sign our petition now to support the City of Sydney banning AirBNBs and unlock thousands of homes for long-term renters in the inner city.
