Homes for people, not profit: Capping short-term rentals in the City of Sydney

Right now, there are thousands of homes in the City of Sydney sitting empty in a housing crisis.

These could be homes for families, a roof over the head for those wanting to build a life in our community.

Why? Airbnbs. Property investors are buying houses and renting them out short-term for huge profits – even if it means these homes sit empty for a lot of the year.

In suburbs like Darlinghurst, Potts Point, Paddington and Millers Point there are streets where most of the houses are Airbnbs, chained with lockboxes out front.

We have a plan to fix that.

Our Greens colleagues on Byron Council, confronted with a mass shortage of affordable, long-term rentals and countless horror stories like public school teachers or nurses living out of their cars, took action and implemented a 60-day annual cap on unhosted, short-term rentals.

We want to do that here.

A 60-day cap forces property investors back to the long-term market, meaning more homes are available to people who want to live in our neighbourhoods and build a life in our community.

But to win this change and make over 5000 homes in the City of Sydney available to rent for Sydneysiders, we’re going to need your support.
