Greens double representation on the City of Sydney Council

With a huge local swing towards the Greens across the city (+5%), the Greens have been successful in electing Matthew Thompson to join Sylvie Ellsmore on the City of Sydney Council for the 2024-2028 term. Matthew is a community services worker, university student studying Environmental Science and a queer activist.

At the election, there were swings to the Greens everywhere across the city, with the Greens winning the most votes of any party (30%+) at a number of polling booths.

Importantly - for the first time in 20 years the voters delivered a minority council – not controlled by the Lord Mayor or one party. It is a renewed, minority council, with a clear mandate for reform.

The past term on council, and during the election campaign, the Greens worked to set agenda and deliver a council that is committed to stronger action on housing affordability and inequality.

Councillor (elect) Matthew Thompson said, “For the second election in a row the Greens received the highest increase in our vote of any party or team.

“The Greens took a bold platform to the election of building public homes, increasing developer levies to fund affordable housing, and providing low-cost power to renters with a community battery and solar network – and the community responded.

“It’s clear that the community want a Council that does more on housing, cost-of-living and climate and believes in our plan to build a Sydney for all of us.

“The community wants change, and we are going to make sure change is delivered,” Councillor Thompson said.

A HUGE thank you to the everyone who helped out.
