Reclaiming Laneways for People and Nature

Matthew recently took advantage of the sun peaking through to visit Magic Lane in Annandale to check out what the future of our City looks like

Magic Lane used to be barren and bare, sitting as dead, wasted space. Fast forward to today and it’s a green oasis, buzzing with life, a place for people and nature alike. This community-led transformation shows us what is possible with the thousands of other laneways in the inner city.

This is why, at the August Council meeting, Sylvie and Matthew secured support for City staff to investigate what lanes, alleyways and even small residential streets we could open up as permanent, public green space.

We know that as the climate gets warmer, we’re going to need to find new, innovative ways to continue increasing our canopy cover. Making room for more trees and greenery is vital for ensuring our City remains cool in the summer, and dry when it rains.

That’s why we're asking the people of the City of Sydney to tell us if there is a laneway near in their community that could be opened up and reclaimed as public green space, just like Magic Lane.

People can either send us an email or jump onto Matthew's Instagram and TikTok and drop a comment on the latest video that we can pass onto City staff.

Our public spaces belong to all of us and there is so much more we can do to open up our City for people and nature – and that’s exactly what your Greens Team on the City of Sydney will keep working with you to make a reality.

We will have more to say on this, and how people can be involved in the campaign in the coming months.
